French writer on aesthetics who studied philosophy and educational theory in Bayonne and Paris, gaining a doctorate at the Sorbonne. After being a schoolmaster, he succeeded Victor Basch in the chair of aesthetics at the Sorbonne, which he held from 1933 until his death on 1 April 1953, aged 76.
