American artist who followed the Cubist aesthetic but created paintings which, while abstract, contained readily identifiable subjects. Knaths married once, no children. Knaths died on March 9, 1971, in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts, after a brief illness.
Sy Scholfield quotes from 'Karl Knaths: Five Decades of Painting' in "The Man from Buena Vista: Selected Nonfiction, 1944-2000" by Charles Edward Eaton (Associated University Presses, 2001), p. 99: "His certificate of birth states that an 'unnamed Knaths' was delivered by midwife at 8 P.M. on Wednesday, 21 October 1891, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin."
