Biography
Scottish Union leader, the General Secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen. A former railway signalman, Knapp was general secretary of the biggest rail union, the RMT, the last leader of the former NUR from 1983. With his deep Scottish accent and burly frame he was seen as the epitome of left-wing intransigence where in fact, he was a moderate who helped keep down the more militant RMT members. He had a commanding presence, great sincerity and an agile mind.
Knapp died on 13 August 2001.
