Eartha Kitt

Biography

American singer and actress who rose from grinding, abject poverty; an illegitimate child of a half-black, half-American Indian woman and a white father whose identity she never learned. She was called "yella gal" and shunned by her South Carolina neighbors. At one time, little Eartha Mae, her mom and half-sister lived in a forest, surviving on wild berries. Eventually her mom ran off, leaving her to neighbors who subjected her to merciless beatings. At eight, she was rescued by Aunt Mamie, who brought her to Harlem to live. It was there she got her first break, learned to dance with the all-black Katherine Dunham Company.

She escaped to Europe as a dancer, learning her craft and breaking hearts as a member of the Dance Troupe. After meeting her in Paris in 1951, Orson Welles dubbed her the most exciting woman alive. Her Broadway breakthrough came with "New Faces of 1952." She had a couple hit records, "C'est Si Bon" and "Santa Baby" and a stint as Catwoman on the "Batman" TV series.

She was once banned in Boston after terrifying the Brahmans with her predatory sexuality. When she famously denounced the Vietnam War in front of Lady Bird Johnson, she was unwelcome in America for six years, 1968-1974.

Her up-and-down career was echoed with her love life. She married only once, briefly, to realtor Bill McDonald, the father of her one daughter, Kitt Shapiro. She had two long, intense relationships, cinema king Arthur Loew Jr. and cosmetic baron Charles Revson.

Kitt speaks six languages, has written three autobiographies, including "I'm Still Here," 1990 and has been nominated for two Tony's, an Emmy and two Grammy's. A gutsy, sexy feminist who never was a shrinking violet, she stood up for causes long before they were considered chic, the environment, the homeless, civil right, AIDS, declaring when something is important, it is important to stand up for it.

After five decades, she still electrifies the stage with her one-of-a-kind persona in a vibrant and fresh cabaret act. She purrs, prowls and growls, coos and cracks up.

In 2006 she was diagnosed with colon cancer, and she died of the disease on 25 December 2008, aged 81, in Weston, Connecticut.

Source Notes

Birth time of 4 AM from registry quoted in Gauquelin Book of American Charts which has 26 January 1928 (Davies gives same date, 00:10 AM "from her" in "Signs of the Stars.") Sy Scholfield quotes 17 January 1927 from her citing her birth certificate in a 2002 interview (details below). Same date of 17th and place (North, SC) given by her to Frank Clifford, as quoted in Clifford's The Book of Music Horoscopes (Flare UK, 2018). Same date given in America's Mistress by John L. Williams (Quercus, 2013): "Eartha's Kitt's birth was registered on 17 January, 1927 in the small town of St Matthews, which lies a half hour drive south from the state capital Columbia."

(People magazine 7/21/1997 quotes her that she did not know her age or even her birthdate as she was adopted at six when her mom died and her dad was unknown, and that she arbitrarily chose 26 January 1928.

Sy Scholfield sends the following from the web, 13 May 2002: "Eartha Kitt Purr-severes: The feline feminist talks about her two lives as the child and the woman" by Blase DiStefano [1]:

How do you feel though about North, South Carolina?

Well, I thought I was born in North, South Carolina, because that is what I was told. I didn’t have a birth certificate, no proof of where or how old I was until a few years ago. I was living under the understanding that I was born January 26, 1926.

I was doing a benefit for Benedict College in South Carolina and I jokingly, but meaningfully, said, "Well, I am coming down there to do a benefit for you kids. Why don’t you do some research on Eartha Kitt since I was born in that area to find a birth certificate?" I didn’t think that they would do it seriously, but they did it. They found a birth certificate. So it’s Eartha Keith, which was pronounced "Kitt." And it’s January 17, 1927, so I am a Capricorn.

But I was also trying to find out who my father was. And all of the writing on the birth certificate is in the same handwriting, so I still don’t know who my father is. But they say that at that time–and it is still on the books obviously, because this is only a few years ago–that if you are an illegitimate child , the father doesn’t have to put his name down on the certificate. So the nurse put all the information in her handwriting. In many ways, they say, it might be because she is protecting the father because I am supposed to be, according to what I am told, one of the children of the cotton plantation owner’s sons. If I could prove that this is the case, I’d own the whole goddamn everything.

[Both laugh.]"

PT notes that her NY Times obituary recounts the story about students finding her birth certificate and giving her birth date as January 26, 1927.
