John Kipling (in the uniform of the Irish Guards, 1915)

British soldier from a noted family, he was the only son of author Rudyard Kipling. In the First World War his father used his influence to get him an army commission, despite his having been decisively rejected for poor eyesight. His death at the Battle of Loos, on 27 September 1915 at age 18, caused his family immense grief, and placed a great strain on the marriage as Kipling's wife had strongly opposed his enlisting.

The play My Boy Jack was written in 1997 by David Haig. In 2007, it was adapted into a film of the same name, with Daniel Radcliffe as John Kipling.

In Carrie's diary Rudyard recorded 'The boy John is born at 1.50 a.m. this day. C. and he doing well ...'".
