Biography

Dutch Reformed minister and Christian anarchist.

He was the eight child from a family with nine children. His parents Jan Jansonius Kijlstra (1827-1903) and Margaretha Sypkens (1827-1903) married on 12 March 1853 in Rauwerd.

Kylstra (Frisian and English for Kijlsta) was a pastor in Engelum (1894-1897) and Rottevalle (1897-1899). Kylstra wanted to be a Christian of the act and committed himself to the 'poor Frisian heathland'.

On 1 October 1899 he founded with others the Vereniging Internationale Broederschap (International Brotherhood Association) in Blaricum with professor of histology Jacob van Rees, who preferred to stay in Laren. The meant to be self-sustaining farmers colony was built on poor sand ground, so the they had to work hard to survive. Kylstra was befriended with Anne de Koe and stayed in the colony from 1899 to rampant year 1903, when both his parents died and the colony was attacked by neighbours. The colony ended March 1911.

After residents of Blaricum stormed the colony in 1903, Kylstra took office in Oterleek and later in Sint Jacobiparochie from 1908 to 1913. He became a member of the Blijde-Wereldgroep (Happy World Group), started the liberal-religious magazine De Wekker (alarm clock) and devoted himself to liberal hedges. He also wrote several brochures.

Later he stopped his preaching and moved to Portland, Oregon in the United States to become greengrocer.
