Biography
French terrorist murderer, who together with a colleague killed 85-year-old Roman Catholic priest Jacques Hamel, born 30 November 1930 in Darnétal, of the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, during Mass. Two nuns and two churchgoers (Guy, born 26 July 1929, severely injured, and his wife) were taken hostage, in addition to Hamel. The attackers were shot and killed by Rouen's BRI police as they left the church. His colleague, Akdel-Malik Nabil Petitjean, was born 14 November 1996, St-Dié-des-Vosges.
Kermiche, who lived in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, had twice in 2015 attempted to travel to Syria but had once been returned by Germany and once turned back by the authorities at the Turkish border and, as a result, spent time in a French jail and was released in March 2016. Kermiche was released after writing to the judge "I am a Muslim based on the values of mercy, kindness (...) I am not an extremist," and insisting that he recited his prayers twice a day and "wanted to see his friends and marry." The prosecutor opposed his release. Upon his release, he was electronically tagged and a curfew was placed on him, requiring him to live at his parents' home, which was near the church, and to leave his house only between 08:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00
