Elector Palatine Karl I Ludwig (1652)

Biography

German nobleman as the second son of German elector Friedrich V of the Palatinate, the "Winter King" of Bohemia, and his wife, Elizabeth of England.

The most notable facet of his reign was probably his unilateral divorce of his wife, Charlotte of Hesse-Kassel, and subsequent bigamous marriage to Marie Luise von Degenfeld. This second wife was given the unique title of Raugravine (Raugräfin, countess of uninhabited or uncultivated lands), and their children were known as the Raugraves.

He died on 28 August 1680, aged 62, near Edingen.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield quotes from Lives of the Princesses of England, from the Norman Conquest, Volume 5, by Mary Anne Everett Green (Longman, Brown, Green, Longman, & Roberts, 1857), p. 285: "at Heidelberg... on the 24th of December, between four and five, A.M., her second son was born." A footnote gives the source as a letter dated 6 January 1618, sent by way of Brussels. Apparently this late news had the wrong date, as other books give his date of birth as 22 December.
