Joseph Kahahawai (His grave at Puea Cemetery in Kalihi, Honolulu)

American Native Hawaiian prizefighter, also known as "Joe Kalani", he made international news when he was accused of the rape of Thalia Massie. He was abducted and killed on 8 January 1932 at age 22, after he was freed following an inconclusive court case that ended with a hung jury mistrial.

Thalia's mother and husband, and two Navy sailors were eventually tried and convicted of manslaughter in the death of Kahahawai. Originally sentenced to 10 years, their sentence was commuted to one hour in the executive chambers of Governor Lawrence Judd of the Territory of Hawaii.

Kahahawai's funeral service was described as the largest held for any Native Hawaiian not of royalty. There were over two thousand people in attendance with Native Hawaiians making up the majority in the crowd.
