Biography

Elector of Saxony from 23 June 1611 until his death on 8 October 1656. He was the second son of the Elector Christian I and Sophie of Brandenburg. He belonged to the Albertine line of the House of Wettin.

Sy Scholfield quotes "Briefe der Herzogin Sibylla von Jülich-Cleve-Berg an ihren Gemahl Johann Friedrich den Grossmüthigen, Churfürsten von Sachsen" (1838): "Nach Sitte und Bedürfniß der Zeit wurde dem, am 5. März des Jahres 1585, ein wenig nach 10 Uhr gebornen Herrlein das Horoscop gestellt..."

Translation: According to the custom of the time, he was born on 5 March 1585, a little after 10 o'clock we find in​ his horoscope...

Scholfield also quotes "a quarter past ten" from "Gloriosa Electorvm Dvcvm Saxoniae Bvsta, Oder Ehre Derer Durchlauchtigsten und Hochgebohrnen Chur-Fürsten und Hertzoge zu Sachsen Leichen-Grüffte" by Christian August Hausen (Zimmermann und Gerlach, 1728), p. 1383: "zwar auf diese Welt am 1585. am 5. Martii Freitags nach invocar, Nachts ein wenig mehr als ein viertel nach 10. Uhr mit grosser Freude gebohren worden."

Translation: Although he was born into this world with great joy in 1585 on 5 March, on Friday after invocar, at a little more than a quarter past 10 o'clock at night.
