Biography
King of Portugal and the Algarves known as João the Magnificent and the Portuguese Sun King. João V raised the prestige of Portugal, which had been in a long decline amongst European courts, to a new and glorious level of prosperity and wealth.
João V's reign saw an enormous influx of gold to the coffers of the King's Treasury, mainly from the Portuguese colonies of Brazil and Maranhão. He entertained an incredibly lavish court, one of the richest in Europe, which coincided with the enrichment of the Portuguese nobility.
A very pious man, João V devoted large parts of his day to prayer and religious study. The Pope granted him the styling of 'Most Faithful Majesty.'
He was a son of King Pedro II of Portugal and Queen Maria Sofia of Neuburg. Pedro II secured João a marriage to the Austrian archduchess, Maria Anna, sister of Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor, which guaranteed Portugal's alliance with the Habsburgs. João and Maria Anna had six children, including the future Portuguese kings José I and Pedro III. João had another four children with different mistresses. He died on 31 July 1750.
