Biography

Spanish poet who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1956 and whose lyrical writings were inspirational. Though he was an active member of the early period, a time of romantic auras of melancholy, he is best remembered for his second period of forty years. During this time he developed his personal style as in "Eternities," 1918. Always in pursuit of absolute beauty, his best loved and most read book, "Platero and I," was published in 1958.

Jimenez died on 29 May 1958, aged 76, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Source Notes

B.R. in hand from Steinbrecher; "midnight of December 24/25"

(said child was born in the declarant's house, on the 23rd, at midnight).

(At twelve o'clock on the night of 23 December 1881, Juan Ramón Jiménez was born, being twenty-four hours sharp between two days, he preferred to say later that he was born on the 24th, on Christmas Eve, the celebration of so much traditional celebration in Spain).
