The order of "alternative birthtimes" above is purely accidental. It does not mean that one proposal is better than the other. It is caused by some sort mechanism in our Wiki editing software and cannot be influenced by the editor.

The traditional date of birth is given as assumed by Pierre d'Ailly (1351-1420). D’Ailly gives ‎birth time 23:40 (on 24th Dec.) with the ascendant at 2°51'26" Libra. (Elucidarium astronomice ‎concordie cum theologica et historica veritate, chap. 2 and 34). However, in order to arrive at ‎this ascendant, a birth time of 00:03:48 LAT (= 00:07:46 LMT) must be assumed. The original ‎idea might have been that the birth should have taken place at midnight, in the ‎middle of the longest night of the year. (25 December was considered the solstice in the Julian ‎calendar.) According to d’Ailly, others assumed the ascendant at 8°30’02 Virgo. The birth time ‎for this ascendant would be 10:10:23 pm LAT (10:14:19 pm LMT). Albertus Magnus assumed the ‎ascendant in the first decade of sidereal Virgo, tropically between 21°23'58" Leo and 1°23'58" ‎Virgo. (Dieter Koch, "The Star of Bethlehem", 3rd edition (v. 3.07), p. 384) ‎

Clement of Alexandria (150-215 CE) reports that in his time some believed that Jesus was ‎born on 20 May 2 BCE, whereas others believed it was on 19 or 20 April. ‎Clement consideres all these dates as unreliable and all attempts to determine the exact birth ‎day as "overzealous" (Clement, Stromateis, 1.21.145) Modern authors have calculated 18 November as Jesus‘ birth date from Clement’s chronological information. However, this ‎is against Clement’s intention, since he only wanted to calculated the year, not the day, of ‎birth. (Koch, "The Star of Bethlehem", pp. 37f.) ‎

Modern authors have arrived at different birth dates for Jesus, mostly based on their ‎considerations on the Star of Bethlehem in Matthew 2 and the Woman of the Apocalypse in ‎Revelation 12. A very incomplete selection of proposals is given here:‎

‎- Konradin Ferrari d’Occhieppo: 17 January 7 BCE, based on the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction ‎theory and chronological information given by Clement of Alexandria. (Ferrari d’Occhieppo, ‎‎"Der Stern von Bethlehem" (1991)) The exact dates of the triple conjunction were 29 May, ‎‎1 October, and 5 December 7 BCE.‎

‎- David Hughes and Percy Seymour: 15 September 7 BCE, after sunset, at the acronychal ‎rising of Jupiter and Saturn, which they interpret as the "star seen in the east" (Mt 2; Hughes, ‎‎"The Star of Bethlehem" (1976); Seymour, "The Birth of Christ. Exploding the Myth", 1998) ‎

‎- Michael R. Molnar: 17 April 6 BCE, based on coins from Antioch and his studies of ancient astrology. An occultation of ‎Jupiter by the moon took place on this date, Molnar considers Jupiter to be the ‎Star of Bethlehem. "Best" birth times are allegedly sunrise and the culmination of Jupiter. (Molnar, "The Star of Bethlehem. The Legacy of the Magi", 1999, pp. 97ff.) ‎

‎- Colin R. Nicholl: 20 October 6 BCE, "before dawn", based on the Woman of the ‎Apocalypse and the opinion that the star must have been a comet. The comet was "born" from the "vulva" of the constellation Virgo. (Nicholl, "The Great Christ ‎Comet. Revealing the True Star of Bethlehem", 2015, pp. 263, 267; the comet is not visible here in the chart, but can be added at www.astro.com, Extended Chart Selection, bottom of page, as additional object "h59").‎

- Roger Sinnott: 17 June 2 BCE, in the evening, because a spectacular merger of the Venus and Jupiter could be observed from the Holy Land. (Sinnott, "Sky and Telescope", Dec. 1968, pp. 384-386) The time of closest conjunction was 8:20 p.m. (Calculation by D. Koch using the Swiss Ephemeris)

‎- Ernest L. Martin: 11 Sept. 3 BCE (Hebrew New Year), after sunset, based on the ‎spectacular "mergence" of Jupiter and Venus into "one star" on 17 June 2 BCE as well as the "Woman ‎of the Apocalypse" in Rev. 12, which seems to indicate a Jewish New Year new moon. (Martin, "The Star that Astonished the World", 1996)

‎- Werner Papke: 30 August 2 BCE (Hebrew New Year), after sunset, based on the Woman ‎of the Apocalypse and assuming a Supernova in Coma Berenices, which is the "heart" of the Babylonian constellation of the virgin Erua. (Papke, "Das Zeichen des ‎Messias", 1995. Note, Dieter Koch dates the Hebrew New Year of that year one day later. Bob ‎Schlenker even dates it a month later on 29 September, because he believes a leap month must have been inserted in spring.)‎

‎- Dieter Koch: 1 September 2BCE (Hebrew New Year), 4:30 a.m. (before sunrise), based on ‎the Woman of the Apocalypse and the self-identification of Jesus as "the bright morning star" ‎‎(Rev. 22:16), which he thinks refers to a heliacal rising of Venus. (Dieter Koch, "The Star of ‎Bethlehem", in German: "Der Stern von Bethlehem", 2004-2015)‎

Gérard Gertoux, archeologist and historian: 29 September - 2, died 3 April 33 (partial eclipse of the moon)

Crucifixion on 7 April 30 according to Dominican priests.

- John Addey speculated for 22 August 7 B.C. 20.08 LMT in The Astrological Journal vol 1 no. 3 (July 1959)
