Biography
British royalty, the son of King James II who ruled from 1685-1688. With his Stuart lineage, his Jacobite supporters referred to him as James III of England and VIII of Scotland but his detractors called him the Old Pretender.
He died January 1, 1766 (OS; equivalent to January 12, 1766 NS) in Rome.

Sy Scholfield notes that, unlike his siblings, there is no time of birth for James in "Mrs. Dawson's Diary concerning the births, ages, and deaths of James the IId's children" in "Reliquiæ Hearnianæ: the remains of Thomas Hearne, extracts from his MS. diaries, collected with a few notes by P. Bliss, Volume 1" by Thomas Hearne (Oxford: James Wright, 1857), p. 276: "1688. The queen was delivered happily of the prince of Wales upon the 10th of June, being Trinity Sunday, there being present, as in the printed depositions, the king, &c. &c. So soon as the child was born, it was put into the arms of Mrs. Delabadie." Mrs Dawson was the lady of the bedchamber (midwife) to Anne Hyde, the consort of James II.
Yet Scholfield quotes Mrs. Judith Wilks, the midwife in attendance, in her deposition at the Meeting of the King's Privy Council, October 22, 1688: "about ten o'clock that morning, the Queen was delivered of the Prince." Dr. Robert Brady, one of His Majesty's Physicians in Ordinary, gave a more precise time in his deposition: "That a little before ten o'clock in the morning, on the 10th of June, 1688, the deponent was in the Queen's little bedchamber at St. James's . . . ; not being at the birth, the deponent asked how long he had been born; the standers by told him, at three quarters of an hour after nine o'clock the Queen was delivered."
