Source Notes

Steinbrecher quotes the Armond Rampersad biography, 1986, for "near midnight."

LMR quotes "The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes," Arnold Rampersad, editor and David Roessel, associate editor, Alfred A. Knopf, publisher, 1994. The chronology, pp.8 to 20, would serve as an excellent aid to rectification but it contains no reference or allusion to a time of birth. On p.8, it reads, "1902 Born James Langston Hughes, February 1, Joplin, Missouri, to James Nathaniel Hughes, who was a stenographer with a mining company, and Carrie Mercer Langston Hughes, who wrote verse and acted in amateur theatricals."

Starkman quotes the biography "The Life of Langston Hughes:vol 1 1902-1941" by Arnold Rampersad:

" He was born near midnight on February 1, 1902, in the city of Loplin, Missouri. The date of his birth he would take on faith, since Missouri did not require the registration of infants, and his birth was never entered officially there"
