Biography
German dancer and choreographer. She studied at the Gret Palucca School and began choreographing and performing professional solo work in 1933. She was also a member of Wigman's company (1935-6) and performed at the Deutsche Tanzbühne (1940-1), the Theater des Volkes, in Dresden (1941-3), and the theatre at Graz (1943-4). She ran her own school in Dresden (1946-8) and directed the ballet company at Hamburg Staatsoper (1949-51), attempting, unsuccessfully to transform it into a modern dance ensemble. She continued to perform her own solo works until 1966, winning special acclaim in S. America during the 1950s.
Her last performance was on 18 December 1967 in Berlin, 56 years old, only with the help of painkillers. She was left with a huge debt and she knew she could not dance longer with the injured knee. On 31 December 1967 she committed suicide.
