Biography
South-African diamond discovery."The Cullinan"belongs to the most prominent findings;a miner,Thomas Evan Powell, found it,but the diamond was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, owner of the mine.The rough diamond was given as a present to King Edward VII at his birthday in 1907. The sense was renconciliation, after the war.The Cullinan was then split and polished in Amsterdam at Asscher.Nine principal numbered stones were the result (the "Star of Africa" I and II)together with 96 brilliants.They were set in brooches,in a ring and a necklace.Two also form the Crown jewels.The whole diamond was weighing 3,106 metric carats in its rough state and had a length of more than 10 cm.
