Historic: "Silent Night" (Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1863))

Austrian Christmas carol, created by Franz Xaver Gruber (melody) and Joseph Mohr (text). The first performance was on Christmas Eve 1818 in Oberndorf; the text was written 2 years prior in Mariapfarr. Mohr played the guitar on 24 december 1818. It's not only the most popular song of Christmas: Friedrich Wilhem IV of Prussia was a fan of the melody which was from the beginning an evergreen. The Emperor was interested in the background of the song in 1818 and searched for Gruber, who then made a report about 1818. In the United States it was thought for some time that the song had to be of American origin. Bing Crosby's recording has sold nearly as many copies as all other recordings put together. UNESCO declared "Silent Night" as an item of cultural heritage in 2011. Even in 1914 - at Christmas - it was sung together by English and German troops.
