British-American novelist whose first novel, "Catherine Herself," was published in 1921 when he was only 20 years old.

Hilton is widely known for "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," "Lost Horizon," 1933 and "Random Harvest, " 1941. These books, and others, all eventually became motion pictures. He was considered a keen mountaineer and a modest and retiring man who enjoyed music and travel.

Hilton died of liver cancer on 20 December 1954 in Long Beach, CA.
