Biography
Australian film director of the movie "Shine," the story of David Helfgott. The film, profiling Helfgott's life, was released and applauded at the Sundance Film Festival on 1/21/1996. At the 1997 Academy Awards ceremony, the film racked up seven Oscar nominations.
Hicks background covers film, TV drama, documentaries, commercials and music videos in which he was worked as director, producer and writer. During the ‘80s, he directed international films and documentaries.
In 1986, Hicks first heard David Helfgott in concert in Adelaide, Australia. He was so impressed by the Helfgott story, that he persevered for ten years to bring the drama to the screen.
With the stunning success of "Shine," Hicks has been in demand as a director and in 2000, his film "Snow Falling on Cedars" was released.
Hicks married Kerry Heysen in 1971 and they make their home in Adelaide, Australia. Despite Hicks' international work, they are not tempted by any desire to relocate to Hollywood.
