Biography

French physicist, chemist and inventor, son of a family of Alsatian notables who refused the annexation of 1870. He invented a magneto hydrodynamic generator in 1930, then oriented his work in the field of nuclear physics from 1934, and with industrial funding created a research laboratory on the properties of the atom, which he installed at his home in Paris. He then hired the young chemical engineer Jacques Bergier with whom he studied the use of heavy water to slow down neutrons in the nuclear fission reaction, developed a process for manufacturing lithium deuteride, and produced the first synthesis of a natural radioactive element, polonium, from bismuth and heavy hydrogen by volatilizing a tungsten filament (and gold particles from wood chips by the sublimation of this same filament). In 1939, he published the law (known as Helbronner and Bergier law) on the physical antagonism between solar and radioactive radiation.

Shortly before his transfer to London he was arrested by the Gestapo on 7 June 1943 in Lyon, then spent 60 days in a bedbug-infested cell in Montluc prison. The Germans then tried during torture to rally him to their cause and interest him in the V27 program. He confessed nothing about his fellow Resistance fighters. He was then transferred on 28 October 1943 to the Compiègne triage centre, from which he was sent on 27 January 1944 to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where he died on 14 March 1944 from pneumonia at age 65.
