Biography

German-American kidnapper and murderer who was convicted of the 3/01/1932 kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby. He was arrested on 9/19/1934 and went to trial on 1/02/1935. After the trial was completed and a conviction obtained, Hauptmann was given the death sentence on 2/13/1935.

A carpenter by trade, Hauptmann had an arrest record in Germany from 1919, when he was given five years in prison; he was paroled in 1923. That same year, Hauptmann moved to the U.S., marrying in 1925.

Died by electric chair on 4/03/1936, Trenton, NJ.
