Biography
German lawyer and politician in the Democratic People's Party and later the DDP. In July 1917, he was one of the initiators of a resolution passed by the Reichstag for a peace agreement to end the First World War, which ultimately could not prevail.
Haußmann came from a democratically shaped Württemberg family. His father Julius Haußmann was involved in the 1848 revolution in the Kingdom of Württemberg. His mother was Swiss. His twin brother Friedrich also belonged to the German Reichstag.
After graduating from the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Stuttgart, Haussmann studied in Zurich, Munich, Berlin and Tübingen. He settled as a lawyer in Stuttgart in 1883. In 1907 he participated with his friends Hermann Hesse and Ludwig Thoma in the founding of the political-literary magazine März (March), in which he wrote under the pseudonym Heinrich Hutter. Haußmann, who campaigned for Franco-German reconciliation, gave Anatole France and Jean Jaurès the opportunity to write in März.
Haußmann was married to Helene Kausler from 1887; they had two sons. The older son Robert worked as a lawyer in Stuttgart and presided over the local bar association. His other son Wolfgang Haußmann (1903-1989) was Baden-Württemberg Minister of Justice from 1953 to 1966.
Conrad Haußmann died in Stuttgart on 11 February 1922 at age 65.
