American amateur horticulturist who first grew the Hass avocado, the source of 95% of California avocados grown commercially today.

Hass married Elizabeth Schuette in 1919 in Milwaukee and they moved to Pasadena, California in 1923. In 1925, Hass bought a small acre and a half avocado grove in La Habra Heights, California.

In August 1935 Hass patented his 'Hass' avocado tree, however, the patent was widely violated. Rudolph Hass expanded to Fallbrook, planting an 80-acre (320,000 m2) orchard in 1948 which bore its first crop in 1952, just as his 17-year patent expired.

One month after the patent expired in August 1952, at the age of 60, Rudolph Hass suffered a heart attack on 24 September 1952. He died of heart failure in the Fallbrook Hospital a month later on 24 October 1952 at age 60.
