Biography
American silent film actor, screenwriter, director and producer, remembered as a beloved Western cowboy star. During the late 1910s and early 1920s, he was one of the most consistently popular movie stars, frequently ranking high among male actors in popularity contests held by movie fan magazines. He first became a hero in a stage play in 1905, "The Squaw Man." He was also the author of several novels.
On 7 December 1921 Hart married actress Winifred Westover in Los Angeles. She was 22-years-old, and Hart was 57. The couple’s son, William S. Hart, Jr., was born on 22 September 1922. On 11 February 1927 Westover was granted a divorce in Reno, Nevada. She received $100,000, with the understanding she would not return to acting or have her photograph published. A trust fund of $100,000 was established for William S. Hart, Jr., to be used for his support and education. Hart, Jr. became a professor of land economics at the University of Southern California.
When he died of a stroke in the California Lutheran Hospital at 11:20 PM on 23 June 1946 at age 81, William S. Hart left a 225-acre ranch to Los Angeles county as a park for children.

Source Notes
Church of Light old file gave 6 December 1870, 8:33 AM, source unknown.
In August 2022 the birth year was changed to 1864. Sy Scholfield quotes from an obituary, "The son said in a sworn statement to the bureau of vital statistics that Hart was born in Newburgh, N. Y., December 6, 1864. That would make his age 81. Hospital records had it 83 and movie sources 75." (The State, Columbia, South Carolina, 25 June 1946, page 1). The obituary in The Los Angeles Times (24 June 1946) gives his time of death but states in error that the "83-year-old" was born in "1862."
