American musical director, composer and pianist who served as the conductor of the hit Broadway musical "Hair" for the last two years of its run, 1970-1972, making her not only the first African American to conduct on Broadway, but also the first woman to do so. Harris was also the first black woman to conduct the symphony orchestras of Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Minnesota, and orchestras of 11 other American cities. Her compositions include two ballets, the opera King David, and two piano concertos. Harris died of a heart attack aged 56 on March 7, 2000.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield quotes date and place from online obituary (http://thedeadrockstarsclub.com/2000.html). Ascendant sign from her in a newspaper article, "A Piano Prodigy At 3; Now the Conductor of Hair" by Joan Cook, The New York Times, 5 November 1970, p. 62: "I'm Virgo, but the moon is in Aries and the rising sun is in Aquarius." Note: As she has a Virgo Sun it should probably read 'rising sign is in Aquarius;' perhaps a typo?

A speculative time of 5:30pm gives mid-Aquarius rising.
