Kenneth Anger "Hollywood Babylon II," p.49, "a few minutes after midnight", on 1 January. Haines himself also claimed to be born on 1 January. The only document, a baptismal record of 1908, gives the date of birth as 2 January. It is quoted on p.1 of Wisecracker: The Life and Times of William Haines, Hollywood's First Openly Gay Star by William Mann.

The town of Staunton replied to Ed Steinbrecher's inquiry in 1987 that it did not have any record for Haines.
