American film director and producer and noted spouse, the husband of British actress Helen Mirren.
After graduation from college Hackford joined the Peace Corps. Stationed in Bolivia he found great pleasure in using his motion picture camera and decided then that a career in film was what he wanted. He got his first job as a low-paid mail clerk at a public TV station but quickly worked his way up producing shows about rock stars, then to journalist and producer of short TV documentaries. He copped several awards including two Emmys. In 1978 he left the station and began working in film. His first effort, "Teenage Father" (1978) won an Oscar for Best Short Film. Since then he has directed or produced several films, including "White Nights" (1985), "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982), and "Ray" (2004) which captured an Oscar for its leading star, Jamie Foxx.
