French tax inspector, director of several government firms, director of the Treasury in 1978, and chairman of Paribas in 1982-1986. He was chairman of Crédit Lyonnais from 1988 until when it neared bankruptcy in 1993. The fall of Crédit Lyonnais has been described as one of the biggest financial scandals in history.
