American financier, the former Chairman of Lockheed Corporation in 1976 for 20 months, revamping it and building it up, restoring its finances and restoring confidence.

A tall, amiable Midwesterner, he has a talent for public speaking. In 1967 he left the presidency of the National Association of Securities Dealers after three years to take on the top full-time post as the president of the New York Stock Exchange.
