Georges Gurdjieff

Biography

Armenian/Rusian Sufi and brilliant practitioner of the Sufi faith, born to a Greek father (Ἰωάνης Γεωργιάδης) and Armenian mother in Alexandropol (now Gyumri, Armenia), then part of the Russian Empire. He became a guru who traveled the far and near East before establishing a center in France. His closest student, P.D. Ouspensky, born 4 March 1878 (OS), wrote extensively of his teachings. His book In search of the miraculous is availble online. Gurdjeff's book Meetings with Remarkable Men includes his biography, and a film with the same title by Peter Brook (born 21 March 1925) is based on it.

He died on 29 October 1949.

Source Notes

Church of Light from Predictions, 8/1964, time given by his sister as just after midnight. (January 1, 1872 OS) Penfield quotes Mayer for 00:39 AM from "Gurdjieff Memoirs," however, Mayer in "Handbook of Astrology" quotes Davison for that time. Lescaut corrected his original 1877 to 1872 in his Pisces book errata sheet, quoting Jacques Dorsen's "Dictionary Des societes Secretes."

Various dates are given but literature repeats that there is no known birth date.

Taeger IHL has 13 January 1877, 00:45 (12.45 am), quoting an unnamed Gurdjeff pupil to Taeger himself.

An extensive chronology of his life is found at www.gurdjieff.org, which holds also January 1866 as birth year.

Wayne Turner writes on 1 Nov 2015 by email:

I have copies of pages 83&84 of the September 1965 issue of Astrology (Vol 39 #3) that include Ronald Davison's horoscope data and chart for Gurdjieff. The article is titled simply Profile: George Ivanovich Gurdjieff and states: "Gurdjieff has been represented as an enigma by several writers, some of whom claimed to be personally acquainted with him. Even the day of his birth has been made the subject of controversy, largely because Gurdjieff, for his own good reasons, appears to have laid several false trails. His sister, [Sophie Kapanadze] who had no special motive for not giving the correct information, states [where?] that he was born in Alexandropol on 13th January, 1877, at midnight....Gurdjieff's followers always celebrated his birthday on the 13th January (the start of the Russian New Year, Old Style) and so the idea grew that this was a kind of symbolic birthday....When births are reported as taking place at noon or midnight, this is usually a sign that the actual time has not been recorded with any great accuracy. A rectification based on events gives 25LI21 as the probable Ascendant, which puts the local time of birth at 12:39 a.m." The exact Asc for 00:39 LMT would be 25LI28 using 43.50.50 e, 40.47.21 n. Davison's included chart illustration on page 83 shows the above Asc with an MC of 29CA51, the Sun at 22CP49, and the Moon at 4CP54.

The best documentation that I've found online is here: http://www.gurdjiefflegacy.org/40articles/whengurdjieffwasborn.htm

There are photos of a French driver's license with a birth date of 28 Dec 1872, and an identity/passport document issued in New York that gives 28 Dec 1877. (Unfortunately, the Wikipedia article on Gurdjieff gives this date incorrectly as 28 November 1877. It also states that Gurdjieff said he was born at the stroke of midnight, at the beginning of New Year's day (OS), but does not give the source.) The website's owner, author William Patrick Patterson, argues for the 1872 date as being more logical, but this assumes that a date of 1888 given by Gurdjieff in Meetings With Remarkable Men is accurate, and that the reported events for that year actually took place. [end of Turner quote]
