Francesco Guicciardini

Biography

Italian historian and statesman, and a friend and critic of Niccolò Machiavelli, Guicciardini is considered one of the major political writers of the Italian Renaissance. In his masterpiece, The History of Italy, Guicciardini paved the way for a new style in historiography with his use of government sources to support arguments and the realistic analysis of the people and events of his time.

Guicciardini practised law in Florence in 1506 and served as Florentine ambassador to Spain 1512-1514. He entered papal service and was named Governor of the papal state of Modena 1516-1524. He was also Governor of the papal state of Reggio, 1517. As President of the Romagna, 1523, he restored order, built roads and public structures.

In 1534, Guicciardini began his monumental work, The History of Italy told in 20 volumes, considered the greatest historic work of its time.

He died in Arcetri, Duchy of Florence on 22 May 1540 OS at age 57 without male heirs. His nephew, Lodovico Guicciardini, was also a historian known for his 16th-century works on the Low Countries.

Source Notes

Arthur Blackwell quotes R. Ridolfi, "Life of Francesco Guicciardini", Knopf, 1968. The date was 6 March 1483/84, "five hours after sunset," OS. The OS year began at 25 March, so this is 1484 NS, and Florentine time began the day at sunset (5:50 PM) and five hours after sunset is still March 5 by NS reckoning, approximately 10:50 PM. (Blackwell converted to a spec time of 22:16 UT.)

(Americana gives 6/06/1483).

Sy Scholfield quotes from Marsilio Ficino e il ritorno di Platone: mostra di manoscritti stampe e documenti 17 maggio-16 giugno 1984 : catalogo by Sebastiano Gentile (Le Lettere, 1984), page 184: "Il Ficino padrino di Francesco Guicciardini - marzo 1483 FRANCESCO GUICCIARDINI , Ricordi autobiografici e di famiglia . Firenze , Archivio Guicciardini , filza X , c . 2 r . Cart . , sec . XVI , cm 29x21 , 5 , cc . I , 225 ( numerazione antica ; mancanti le cc 144-191: autografo). Nato il 6 marzo 1483 ( st . fior . 1482 ) Francesco Guiccardini fu battezzato poco dopo . Come egli stesso narra nelle sue Ricordanze , uno dei padrini del battesimo fu il Ficino : « Ricordo come io Francesco di Piero Guicciardini , al presente dottore di legge civile et canoniche , nacqui a dì 6 di marzo 1482 in Firenze a hore X in circa , et a baptesimo mi fu posto nome Francesco..."

(Translation: Ficino, godfather of Francesco Guicciardini - March 1483 FRANCESCO GUICCIARDINI, Autobiographical and family memories. Florence, Guicciardini Archive, row X, c. 2 r. Cart. , sec. XVI, 29x21.5 cm, cc. I, 225 (old numbering; cc 144-191 missing: autograph). Born on 6 March 1483 (st. Fior. 1482) Francesco Guiccardini was baptized shortly after. As he himself narrates in his Recollections, one of the godparents of baptism was Ficino: "I recall how I, Francesco di Piero Guicciardini, the present doctor of civil and canonical law, was born on the 6th of March 1482 in Florence at about ten in the evening, and at baptism I was given the name Francesco...).

Further, from I Guicciardini e le scienze occulte: L'Oroscopo di Francesco Guicciardini, lettere di alchimia, astrologia e cabala a Luigi Guicciardini by Francesco Guicciardini (L.S. Olschki, 1990), page 8: "« a Roberto Ridolfi , amico , illuminato epigrafista guicciardiniano , con animo grato riconoscente. Paolo Guicciardini - Firenze , settembre 1950 » .

(Translation: «To Roberto Ridolfi, friend, enlightened Guicciardinian epigraphist, from a grateful soul. Paolo Guicciardini - Florence, September 1950 ». But on that date, as Ridolfi himself later confessed, he had not yet realized that the horoscope was precisely that of Francesco Guicciardini: only years later, when he was already writing the Guicciardinian biography, taking up the manuscript he had given him again, he realized that the first astrological table contained precisely the data relating to the birth of the historian: five o'clock in the night of 6 March 1482 (Florentine style) which is equivalent to 6 March 1483 ten o'clock in the evening).

Considering these biographical accounts, and also that the day started at sunset on the 6th at about 6 PM LMT to which five hours are added to make about 11 PM LMT STILL ON THE 6TH, Scholfield in August 2020 changed the date to 6 March 1483 OS and kept the time of 11 PM LMT.

Indeed, Scholfield finds no year of 1484 in the Ridolfi book.

(Translation: He was born in Florence in a grim house on the street which in a century will take its name from his (and was then called "di Piazza") on March 6 of the year 1483, at five o'clock in the night according to the calculation then current, which was about ten in the evening).
