Source Notes
Starkman quotes Maria Chstyakova who made a comprehensive research on Gogol birth and came to the conclusion that the biography of Shevyron Stepan is the most reliable. Shevyron was a literary critic and friend of Gogol. The Science Academy asked him to write Gogol’s biography after his death in 1852. Не met with Gogol's mother and made records from her words. His biography is unfinished, but his notebooks preserved. He wrote the Gogol's mother gave the time 9.00 PM on 19 March 1809.
Previously, Penfield Collection quotes Barbault "who believed he had Libra rising," and adds, "I have seen another chart which places the birth around midnight." Old-file has the same date, 11:40 PM LMT. (March 19 OS)
Andre Barbault in personal correspondence with LMR May 2001 writes that the data is fiction. "In his "Gogol," (Flamarion 1971), Troyat mentions the parish records #25 in which his birthdate is given as 3/20/1809, no known time. He himself celebrated his birthday on the 19th."
