Biography
Polish-born Jewish Australian who survived after being a slave labourer at Auschwitz. His family had fled Russia in 1921 and settled in Berlin. After Kristallnacht he was evacuated to Belgium with the Kindertransport. He tried to escape but at the Swiss border he was arrested as a spy. The Gestapo interrogated and tortured him and transported him to Auschwitz where he survived despite being forced into hard labor, subjected to beatings, and enduring horrific living conditions. On the 1945 Death March, he escaped and hid in the woods.Through sheer will he survived, and was found by US forces. At the end of the war, he was reunited with his mother. They emigrated to Australia in 1947.
