Conrad Gesner (Conrad Meyer)

Biography

Swiss universal genius in the 16th century.Born in Zurich he was first teacher,then Professor for Greek in Lausanne, at the end of his life city physician.But his glory goes back being a pioneer in zoology and botanics where he happened to draw a line between Aristoteles to the Middle Age and his own judgement.That way his books "Historiae animalium"(Histories of Animals) and "Historia plantarum" appeared in several volumes,partly post mortem.To that time they stood on the "List of forbidden books".Gesner wrote also different books about geology.He cared for the sciences by mentioning countless authors who had written before about similar things in former times. As he wouldn't that these sources could disappear he got foundator of bibliography.

Conrad Gesner died on 13 december 1565(in the night)through the plague.
