Joseph Simon Gallieni


French military, a general, a statesman and an author. He is remembered for his efforts in 1914 to prevent a German breakthrough on the Marne by enlisting Parisian cabdrivers to rush reinforcements to the front. He was Minister of War from 1915 until he died 27 May 1916, in Versailles, France. He was posthumously made Marshal of France.
