Elias Magnus Fries


Swedish mycologist and botanist, considered to be a founding father of the modern taxonomy of mushrooms. Fries most important works were the three-volume Systema mycologicum (1821–1832), Elenchus fungorum (1828), the two-volume Monographia hymenomycetum Sueciae (1857 and 1863) and Hymenomycetes Europaei (1874). He died on 8 February 1878, aged 83, in Uppsala.

Moser, in "Zeitschrift für Mykologie," Vol. 44 (1978), pp. 179-189: "Wie die Eintragung im Taufregister zeigt (Abb. 2) (heute in privatem Besitz), wurde Elias Magnus Fries am 15. August 1794 um 11 Uhr vormittags als Sohn des Pastors Magnus Theodor Fries und der Sara Elisabeth geb. Wernelin geboren" (p. 179).

Translation: According to the entry in the baptismal register (fig. 2) (now in private hands), Elias Magnus Fries was born on 15 August 1794 at 11 o'clock in the forenoon as the son of Pastor Theodor Magnus Fries and Sara Elisabeth nee Wernelin.
