Peter Fraser (Circa 1942)

Scots-born Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Politically active from an early age in Scotland, he emigrated to New Zealand late in the year 1910. He became involved in labour unions and socialist politics: he was co-founder of the New Zealand Labour Party, and worked his way up from MP to cabinet minister and eventually prime minister in 1940.

Fraser devoted much attention to the formation of the United Nations at the San Francisco conference in 1945. Noteworthy for his strong opposition to vesting powers of veto in permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, he often spoke unofficially for smaller states. He was elected chairman of one of the main committees relating to dependent territories. He earned the respect of many world statesmen through his commitment to principle, his energy, and most of all his skill as a chairman.

He was defeated in the 1949 election, but stayed on as opposition leader until his death the following year.
