Biography

Canadian newspaper and magazine journalist, a top political columnist who spared no one, he was widely known by the nickname Dr. Foth and styled himself as "the Great Gatheringfroth". Never at a loss for words, he was simultaneously hilarious and cynical in his writings. His readers either loved or hated his work, but he was too well informed to be ignored. Brilliantly witty, he drew a fine distinction between influence and power.

His father died from an appendectomy gone wrong when he was two, and his mother re-married, with Allan taking his stepfather's surname Fotheringham.

He died on 19 August 2020 at his home in Toronto several days short of his 88th birthday.
