Domenico Fioravanti (with the Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi)


Italian swimmer, competitor in the 2000 Olympic games in Australia, placing first with the Gold Medal in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events. The first-ever Italian to win in swimming at the Olympics, on 17 September 2000, 18:35 AEST in Sydney, he set an Olympic record of 1:00.46.

In 2004 he was forced to retire from competitive swimming due to a genetic heart anomaly.
