Portuguese soldier in the Expeditionary Corps during World War I who, after six months in combat, was charged with desertion, and sentenced to death by firing squad. He became the only Portuguese citizen to receive capital punishment during the war, and the last person to be sentenced to death by a Portuguese court (the death penalty had been abolished in Portugal in 1867 for civilians, but it was recovered by decree during World War I only for military personnel in the theatre of war).
On the morning of 16 September 1917, eleven men, commanded by Major Horacio Severo de Morais Ferreira, formed the platoon that executed Ferreira de Almeida by gunfire.
