Biography
King of the Two Sicilies from 1816, after his restoration following victory in the Napoleonic Wars. Before that he had been, since 1759, Ferdinando IV of the Kingdom of Naples and Ferdinando III of the Kingdom of Sicily. He was deposed twice from the throne of Naples: once by the revolutionary Parthenopean Republic for six months in 1799 and again by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1805.
Ferdinando was the third son of King Carlos III of Spain, Naples and Sicily by his wife, Maria Amalia of Saxony. On 10 August 1759, Carlos succeeded his elder brother, Ferdinando VI, but treaty provisions made Carlos ineligible to hold all three crowns. On 6 October, he abdicated his Neapolitan and Sicilian titles in favour of his third son, because his eldest son, Felipe had been excluded from succession and his second son, Carlos, was heir to the Spanish throne. Ferdinando was the founder of the cadet House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.
On 7 April 1768, by proxy, he married Archduchess Maria Carolina, daughter of Empress Maria Theresa. They had eighteen children. Maria Carolina died on 8 September 1814.
On 27 November 1814, he married Lucia Migliaccio.
He died on 4 January 1825, aged 73, in Naples.
