Prince of Asturias Felipe Prospero (1659 portrait by Velázquez)

Spanish prince, the first male child of the marriage between Philip IV of Spain and Mariana of Austria to survive infancy.

By 1659 the prime ministers of France and Spain had been negotiating an end to their countries' hostilities for two years. With the birth of Felipe, Spain had a male heir, and agreed to consolidate the peace by marrying the king's eldest child Maria Theresa to the French king Louis XIV. The outcome of the negotiations was the Treaty of the Pyrenees, which established France as the world's new dominant power.

Philip Prospero suffered from epilepsy and became ill frequently, probably due to having a very defective immune system from generations of inbreeding. On November 1, 1661, he died following a severe epileptic attack.

Sy Scholfield cites the record of a contemporary chronicler quoted in "Art and Death at the Spanish Habsburg Court: The Royal Exequies for Philip IV" by Steven N. Orso (University of Missouri Press, 1989), p. 78: "Barrionuevo evidently compiled this aviso in several sittings because it ends by reporting that a boy had been born at 11:30 a.m. on November 28. The infant was Felipe Prospero..."
