John Evelyn (Portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1687)

English writer, gardener and diarist.

Evelyn's diaries, or memoirs, are largely contemporaneous with those of the other noted diarist of the time, Samuel Pepys, and cast considerable light on the art, culture and politics of the time (the deaths of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, the last Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of London in 1666). Over the years, Evelyn's Diary has been over-shadowed by Pepys's chronicles of 17th-century life.

Evelyn died on 27 February 1706 at his house in Dover Street, London.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield quotes two sources with different times of birth:

"John Evelyn's Diary: a Selection from the Diary" (The Folio Society, 1963, ed. Philip Francis), p. 3: "I was born about twenty minutes past two in the morning on Tuesday the 31st, and last, of October Anno 1620."

"Oxford historical and literary studies: Volume 11" (1920): "Notwithstanding Evelyn's precise statement, the Parish Register at Wotton says that he was born at one o'clock in the morning, and Aubrey (Brief Lives, i. 150), who amused himself by drawing the horoscopes of his friends, says the same."
