French sociologist noted for having been an influence on Nietzsche. He was a student of Comte and Spencer. Although initially an adherent of positivism, he later became a committed realist.

Student of Auguste Comte and Herbert Spencer , he was professor of philosophy and history of the social economy. He was elected member of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences in 1905.

He died on 24 February 1922 in Saint-Florentin, Yonne.
