British pop band, commercially created with six months of auditions and playoffs to select five attractive and talented young people. The producers ended up with Lisa Scott-Lee, Ian Watkins (H), Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans and Faye Tozer. After careful grooming, Steps rocketed into the UK charts in late 1997 with their upbeat single, "5-6-7-8." The song stayed in the top 40 for three months, selling over 290,000 copies.

Proving their staying power, they put out another catchy single and a ballad. By 1/02/1999, Steps hit the top of the charts, the No.1 spot. They toured steadily, including the U.S. in July 1999. In the short space of two and a half years, Steps have gone from a line dancing group to the five coolest and most loved people on earth.

On 2 November 1999, 4:30 PM, Steps began to host a TV variety show.

Four of the group members have their data on AstroDatabank. The fifth, Ian Watkins, was born on May 8, 1976, time unknown. The slender blond is known by his nickname, "H," standing for Hyperactive. He grew up in Llwyniphia in Rhondda, Wales and retains that lovely Welsh accent.

When Richards and Watkins departed, the group disbanded on 26 December 2001. Their penultimate single reached number five in the UK charts while their final album of greatest hits, Gold (2001), was the group's second number-one album in the UK.

Steps reformed in May 2011 for a four-part documentary series on Sky Living titled Steps: Reunion. The series started airing on 28 September, following an announcement of a second Greatest Hits album, The Ultimate Collection, that was released on 10 October 2011. The album entered the charts at #1, becoming the band's third UK #1 album. Series 2 of Steps Reunion titled "Steps: On the Road Again" aired on Sky Living in April 2012; the series followed the band as they embarked on their sellout 22-date UK tour.

The group reformed for a second time on 1 January 2017 in celebration of their 20th anniversary, and later announced their fifth studio album Tears on the Dancefloor, which was released in April 2017.
