Paul Ehrenfest


Austrian and Dutch theoretical physicist, who made major contributions to the field of statistical mechanics and its relations with quantum mechanics, including the theory of phase transition and the Ehrenfest theorem.

In Amsterdam, on 25 September 1933, he lost his battle with depression. Having made arrangements for the care of his other children, he first shot his younger son Wassily, who had Down syndrome, then killed himself around 5 PM.

Wassily died the next day.
