British royalty, the fourth son of James, Duke of York (later James II of England) and his first wife Anne Hyde. Edgar was born at St James's Palace. On 7 October 1667 he was created Duke and Earl of Cambridge, and Baron of Dauntsey, Wiltshire. He died at Richmond Palace on 8 June 1671 and buried in Westminster Abbey on 12 June 1671. The town of Edgartown, Massachusetts on Martha's Vineyard is named in his honor.

Bliss, Volume 1" by Thomas Hearne (Oxford: James Wright, 1857), p. 275: "Edgar, duke of Cambridge, was born Sept. 14, 1667, at 8 minutes before 7 in the morning, and dyed the 8th of June, 1671." Mrs Dawson was the lady of the bedchamber (midwife) to Anne Hyde, in attendance when Anne gave birth to Edgar.
