French first lady ("Première dame") as the wife of President Paul Doumer who was in office from 13 June 1931 to 7 May 1932 when he was assassinated after less than a year into his presidency.
The mother of eight children, she saw four of her five sons die for France as a result of the First World War. Marked by the death of her sons (her daughter Lucile also died of grief after losing her brothers), Blanche became austere and rarely left her home.
