Source Notes
Penfield Collection (May 30, 1265 OS), stating that the date is implied in "Dante Vito" by Giovanni Papini; "Dante and His Time" by Karl Federn; "The Life of Dante" by Charles Dinsmore; and "Dante and His World" by Thomas Chubb. Penfield continues, "Many old sources state that he had Saturn rising, which would place his birth around sunset."
LMR quotes Thomas Chubb, "Dante and His World," 1966, p.48, "Boccacio states 'latter part of May, from the notes of a peer.'" The English scholar Edward Moore has argued from this that Dante's birthday was May 30, 1265 OS, or at the most, two or three days earlier. Chubb writes that Dante was baptised on Easter Sunday the year after his birth, in 1266. (The Annunciation calendar was in use.)
Sepharial in the British Journal of Astrology 2/1919 gives May 14, 1265 OS. Tony Joseph has May 23, 1265, 5:00 AM LAT from Wangemann. Americana Encyclopedia gives "late May or early June, 1265." "Poets and Their Stars" by Ellen McCaffery, 1936, gives May 22, 1265 as NS with an MC of 11 Aquarius, ASC 7 Gemini.
Dante himself wrote, "The sign that follows Taurus and was within it," and at another place, "Mother ... did deliver me.... unto the lion 550 times and 30 more had come under the planet Mars."
